VSE Egg Drop Competition

National Engineers Week 2016

Friday, February 26th

Goal:

Design and build a device that will interface with the trolley car provided by the design committee (plans attached) and safely carry a grade A large uncooked egg down a steel cable and into a barricade.  The competition will take place in the Atrium of the Engineering Building.  During the first round, the devices will be released from the second floor to impact a barricade on the first floor.

Rules:

1)    Contest is open to all undergraduates, grad students, faculty and staff from George Mason University.

2)    Teams may not exceed four (4) members. Each team may only enter one (1) design.  Each person may only be on one (1) team.

3)    Each design must be able to connect to the trolley car provided (plans attached).  Hooks will be provided if necessary to attach design to trolley car.

4)    Fully constructed and extended, entries must fit in an 8" x 8" x 8" box.

5)    Students and faculty may be part of only one (1) Egg Drop Team

6)    All entries must be checked at the check-in table by 12:00 noon on the day of the competition. The check-in table will be located in the Atrium.

7)    The contest official will provide eggs.

8)    No propellants are permitted.

9)    Designs will be weighed by a contest official without the egg.  Eggs must be able to be removed from the design for reweighing.

10)         There are no weight restrictions.  Designs will be weighed to the nearest gram.

11)         A contest official will drop all entries.  All entries will be timed as they travel down the cable.

12)         A design will be considered successful if the egg remains uncracked after impacting the barricade and coming to rest.

13)          No repairs can be made after weight in.

14)          No mass can be added after entry has been weight in. Judges have right to disqualify any entry deemed potentially unsafe.

15)         Judges will determine if an entry remains intact.

16)         The egg must remain in the device during travel.  The device must remain attached to the trolley throughout the trial after impact.

17)         THE DECISIONS OF THE JUDGES ARE FINAL.

Team with the highest score wins:                   SCORE = 1000/(0.6*time + 0.4* mass)

.All teams must register by 12:00 noon on Friday, February 26th, 2016 to compete.

NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE.
